Day One: The Wells of Avraham

Genesis 26:12-15 (CJB) 12 Yitz’chak planted crops in that land and reaped that year a hundred times as much as he had sowed. Adonai had blessed him.

*Once Yitz’chak [Isaac] reclaimed his wife and restored his family Jehovah blessed him.

13 The man became rich and prospered more and more, until he had become very wealthy indeed. 14 He had flocks, cattle and a large household; and the P’lishtim [Philistines] envied him. *In the video we watched at the end of our study last week, Miles Weiss revealed that where Avraham was a man of altars, Yitz’chak was a man of wells.

Q. In a spiritual sense, what would you say Avraham’s faithfulness to always build an altar says about Avraham’s relationship with God? __________________________ _______________________________________________.

Q. In a spiritual sense, what would you say Yitz’chak’s faithfulness to live near, dig and re-dig wells says about Yitz’chak’s relationship with Hashem? _________________ _______________________________________________.

15 Now the P’lishtim had stopped up and filled with dirt all the wells his father’s servants had dug during the lifetime of Avraham his father.

*According to the Strong’s: Philistine actually means to “roll or wallow in the dust or dirt”. The mention of the Philistines filling the wells with dirt is a picture of someone trying to keep Jehovah’s people from His presence and the water of life which we can only receive from Him.

*This is clearly a stopping-up of the source of life, the old wells of Avraham who represents the Jews to us [Isaac (Avraham pre-Messiah, Isaac post-Messiah, we’ll dig into this mystery more later this week too)] who must find a way to open up the wells of Avraham to receive the life and truth.

*This can also be a picture of how the worldly things and even worldly people around us can cause the well of living water which sustains our spirit to be stopped up. There is only one way to deal with the issue of worldly influences, and we’ll be discussing our example in the actions of Isaac and the mystery of Avraham’s sacrifices tomorrow.

Day Two:When the world says "Go"

Genesis 26:16-24 (CJB)

16 Avimelekh said to Yitz’chak, “You must go away from us, because you have become much more powerful than we are.”

*A foreign king requiring God’s chosen to leave their presence should come as no surprise to us, even when that king has been used of God to speak God’s kingdom truth into our lives. We are not strong or powerful, but the one we serve is the only source of strength and power anywhere. Jehovah is intimidating to those who are perishing.

*Unlike what we often hear preached in Christian churches today, our task is NOT saving the world. Plain and simple, we are here to preach the gospel that Jehovah’s kingdom has come and can expand into the hearts of anyone who is willing to commit their lives to Him and obey.

*Outside of making sure we are preaching the truth, we are not responsible for salvation. Everyone gets to choose to serve Jehovah or not, just as you and I have. Do not stay in an area where the wells of our life source are being contended away from Jehovah’s purpose and stopped up.

17 So Yitz’chak left, set up camp in Vadi G’rar [the Valley of Garar] and lived there.

*Remember, the purpose of this place for the children of the Lord.

From the Strong’s: Gerar 1642H Gerâr, gher-awr´; a rolling country …, from 1641H gaw-rar´; (PR) to drag off roughly; by implication- to bring up the cud (i.e. ruminate); by analysis- to saw: --- catch, chew, x continuing, destroy, saw.

18 Yitz’chak reopened the wells[note the reference to ruminating in the definition of Gerar above] which had been dug during the lifetime of Avraham his father, the ones the P’lishtim had stopped up after Avraham died, and called them by the names his father had used for them [the names Avraham gave these wells all point to Jehovah as the source]. 19 Yitz’chak’s servants dug in the vadi and uncovered a spring of running water.

20 But the herdsmen of G’rar quarreled with Yitz’chak’s herdsmen, claiming, “That water is ours!” So he called the well ‘Esek [quarrel], because they quarreled with him. 21 They dug another well and quarreled over that one too. So he called it Sitnah [enmity]. 22 He went away from there and dug another well, and over that one they didn’t quarrel. So he called it Rechovot [wide open spaces] and said, “Because now Adonai has made room for us, and we will be productive in the land.”

*Remember our study from yesterday that we noted we would cover the only option available to us when the Philistines (unrepentant, worldly people and influences) get between us and the well of living water. We can learn from Yitz’chak’s example.

Q. Look at the underlined portion at the beginning of vs. 22 above, and write in your journal what Isaac’s example was when the world rose-up to challenge his ownership of the water source. ____________________________________.

*Be prepared to walk away from anything that will keep you from your source, and make sure you have the mind-set today that you will never allow anything to keep you from your sustenance in serving, worshiping and sharing Jehovah. Just know that you may have to walk away from things and people you desire to stay close to Him, He’s worth it all.

*Don’t miss the importance of digging a well after you move away. You must have the living water or you will perish.

23 From there Yitz’chak went up to Be’er-Sheva. 24 Adonai appeared to him that same night and said, “I am the God of Avraham your father. Don’t be afraid, because I am with you; I will bless you and increase your descendants for the sake of my servant Avraham.”

Q. If God had Isaac at Beer Sheba to make something clear, as we see in the definition of the name of this well, what do you suppose He was making clear?

Q. If Isaac is representing today's believers, what do you think we need to see clearly when He encamps us at Beer Sheba?

Day Three: Becoming a Conduit of God's Kingdom

*We can see Jehovah took Isaac and Rebekah to Beer Sheba to sign the same oath with them that He had signed with Avraham and Sarah. They were the next step in Jehovah’s promise of a redeemer who would make a way to overcome the snare of sin.

Genesis 26:25 (TLV) 25 So he built an altar there and called on the Name of Adonai. He pitched his tent there and Isaac’s servants hollowed out a well there.

*Here Isaac shows his willingness to sacrifice [build an altar] and to go deep with Jehovah [dig a well, establish a source]. He is letting go of things that would hold him back in his service to Jehovah’s kingdom, and he is being engravedwith the image of the Son of God so he can serve to bring forth the Son of Promise.

*Beloved brothers and sisters, again, it is so easy to get caught up in this world and living your life here striving to fulfill your plans and dreams and end up missing the blessing of being allowed to be part of Jehovah’s plan. What a pleasure it should be to us that we get to partner with our great king.

*How we need to get a vision of what is coming. Very soon the restoration will be completed, and death, hunger, pain, corruption will be gone. We will live in Jehovah’s presence and shalom.

*Many people tell me they hope we are not actually in the "end days" because there are still so many plans and dreams they want to live here before it’s time for all this to end. Oh, my gosh, to think there is anything here that should be more desirable than to be free from temptation and corruption and to finally be married to the king simply indicates that you do not have a glimpse of what life in Jehovah’s presence is going to be like. We have got to get this understanding to live in the kingdom as scripture says we must.

*Perhaps many reading this blog have never even realized the necessity of having a “kingdom” understanding and mindset. We must, however, wrap our heads around the fact that if we belong to Yeshua we no longer belong to this fallen world. In comparison, this world and all it seems to offer is hideous, as Rabbi Sha’ul said,

Philippians 3:8

“Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ”.

*To be effective at what He has left us here to do, to share the Gospel, to spread the kingdom of God into people’s hearts abundantly, we must live continuously in the presence of God, in the authority of His kingdom.

Assignment: Please take a few minutes to spend some time in awe of Jehovah, our great and awesome God. Ask Him for a vision of what is coming for those who remain faithful and the understanding that we will not miss or long for anything once we live in His kingdom.

Day Four: An Oath in Beer Sheba

*Today we’ll see that now that Isaac has moved to a place where he can truly commit to Jehovah, at a great enough distance from the world, he is ready to make an alliance with this worldly king. Notice who comes to whom. The world will come to you when you are living in Jehovah’s presence and are prepared to serve a banquet of Jehovah’s word.

*Only in this situation are we to make an alliance with people in the world, and see now that Isaac did not move back to Gerar after this incident. Isaac is finally ensconced in the place Jehovah had promised to show him, living securely, and he sends this worldly trinity away endowed with shalom. Isaac has become a servant, covenanted to Jehovah in his own agreement. No longer an enemy.

Genesis 26:26-33 (TLV) 26 Now Abimelech went to him from Gerar along with Achuzzat his friend and Phicol the commander of his army. 27 Isaac said to them, “Why have you come to me, since you hate me and sent me away from you?”

Abimelech 40H 'Ăbîymelek, ab-ee-mel´-ek; father of the king; …, from two root words; 1 H awb; (primary word); father (in a literal and immediate, or figurative and remote application): --- chief, (fore-) father ([-less]), x patrimony, principal. 4428H meh-lek; a king: --- king, royal, from 4427H maw-lak; (PR); to reign; inception- to ascend the throne; causatively- to induct into royalty; hence, (by implication) to take counsel: --- consult, x indeed, be (make, set a, set up) king, be (make) queen, (begin to, make to) reign (-ing), rule, x surely.

*Abimelech came out to Isaac to receive something from Isaac. Isaac was now in a place of obedience to God, and Abimelech, seeing that Isaac was living in peace with God wanted to join himself to God’s people and be blessed.

*Remember, blessing is not usually monetary. The world is obsessed with money, but we need to recognize all God’s provision even when He declines to give us money.

Gerar 1641H remember we previously researched the name of Abimelech’s city. It means “A rolling country” and is presumably from a (PR) 1641H means “to drag off roughly or bring up the cud (ruminate).

*Abimelech came from this place of ruminating to meet with Isaac. He said he had seen that God was blessing Isaac. Do you think Abimelech might have been sitting in his palace thinking about living in God’s presence, what it would mean to have a deeper relationship with the creator and went out to Isaac to find out how to go about it?

Achuzzat (Ahuzzath in the KJV) 276H 'Ăchuzzath, akh-ooz-zath´; … possession; … variety of 272H …; akh-ooz-zaw´; feminine, past participle … something seized … from 270H aw-khaz´; (PR) … : --- be affrighted, bar, (catch, lay, take) hold (back), come upon, fasten, handle, portion, (get, have or take) possess (-ion).

Commander8269H sar, sar; a head person (of any rank or class): --- captain (that had rule) , chief (captain), general, governor, keeper, lord, ([-task-]) master, prince (-ipal), ruler, steward, from 8323H saw-rar´; (PR); to have (transitive - exercise; reflectively - get) dominion: --- x altogether, make self a prince, (bear) rule.

*Abimelech came ready to make peace with Isaac and God. He brought his sin, something he had stolen and his propensity to war and conquer before the Lord. Could this be a sign of repentance? It is interesting that we don’t hear of Israel having trouble with this city anymore under the reign of Abimelech. We cannot belong to Jehovah until we are ready to confess and begin to turn from our sin.

Hate 8130H sane, saw-nay; (PR); to hate (personally): --- enemy, foe, (be) hate (-ful, -r), odious, x utterly.

*The people of Gerar had wanted Isaac gone because he had become so prosperous. Rather than desiring to learn what Isaac knew, they drove him away like an enemy.

Genesis 26:28-29 (TLV) 28 They said, “We’ve clearly seen that Adonai has been with you. So we said, ‘Let there now be an agreement between us—between us and you—and let us make a covenant with you: 29 that you will do us no harm, just as we haven’t touched you and just as we did nothing to you but good, and sent you away in shalom. You are now blessed by Adonai.”

*Isaac is living in God’s blessing. God was prospering him and he was becoming more mighty as time went on. I’m sure all the peoples around must have been fearing him, but Abimelech wanted to live in covenant with Isaac and I believe he wanted to live in covenant with God as well.

Genesis 26:30-31 (TLV) 30 Then he made a feast for them and they ate and drank. 31 Then they got up early in the morning and made a pledge, each to his brother. Then Isaac sent them away and they departed from him in shalom.

*Abimelech and his people had treated Isaac as an enemy. They had ostracized him and told him to leave. Now this king and his people see the prosperity of Isaac at the hands of Adonai and also want God’s blessing. Isaac could have, likewise, spurned these men, but he didn’t. He was excited to share what he had with them and to live with them in shalom.

*This is such a great example for you and I today. The world hates us and wants nothing to do with us when we begin to prosper in Jehovah’s Spirit, but when they come seeking us, having witnessed, from afar, how wonderful it is to love and serve the one true Living God, we must be ready to serve a banquet of Jehovah’s truth and agree to live in peace with them.

Genesis 26:32-33 (TLV) 32 Now it happened that on that day Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well that they dug, and said to him, “We’ve found water.” 33 So he called it Pledge. That is why the city’s name is Beer-sheba to this day.

*Look at the words I underlined in the definition of Beer Sheba. Undoubtedly, Jehovah had shown Isaac that he could trust his God. Once Isaac moved away from the world to dwell in God’s provision, Jehovah had revealed His plan to Isaac just as He had before to Avraham.

*Isaac had covenanted to be part of bringing the Messiah just as his father Avraham had. We also must move away from the world and dwell in Jehovah’s presence. Only then will He reveal His plan to us and use us to bring Messiah and the Gospel of Peace into our sphere of influence in the world.

Project: Re-write vs. 26 and 27 in your own words using insight from the definitions above, any translation of the Bible or other recourse.

Day Five: Esau married Pagan Wives

Genesis 26:34-35 (TLV) 34 When Esau was 40 years old, he took as wife Judith the daughter of Be-eri the Hittite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite. 35 But they caused a bitterness of spirit for Isaac and Rebekah.

*Why do you think the pagan wives of Esau caused a bitterness for Isaac and Rebekah? My friends, there is only one reason Isaac and Rebekah would be so distraught and vexed, and that’s because these foreign women brought their idols with them, and Esau fell to following the idols too. As Steven Denoon says in the video I’m linking below, Esau became the Roman Catholic Church. Esau is still full of idols.

*Note: when Steven says Rachel brought forth “The two nations”, he means Rebekah. It was Rebekah, the wife of Isaac, who we have been studying, who gave birth to twin sons who Jehovah said would be two "nations". This prophecy clearly refers to end time peoples and relates back to the two trees in Gan-Eden which we have learned will be revealed in two churches at the end. Seems to be happening right now to me.
